<image:title>Blog - The Gift That Changed How I see - And like most kids in America, my dreams were tied up in one question grown-ups loved to ask: “What do you want for Christmas?”</image:title>
<image:caption>The holiday quickly became less about meaning and more about the hunt for the perfect thing. And for years, my answer was easy: Barbie. All things Barbie. I loved her just as much as I loved climbing trees and digging through the trash for treasures. But around age twelve, I was no longer the “material girl” that Madonna exemplified.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Gift That Changed How I see - Where Frustration Turned Into Freedom</image:title>
<image:caption>The class focused on chalk pastels which are messy, dusty, and can be hard to control. We practiced drawing still-life objects on large pieces of paper. And at first, I made the same mistake most beginners do: I tried to get everything exact, like a tiny Michelangelo with a too-high ponytail centered on top of my head. But mastery doesn’t begin with perfection. It begins with seeing. One day, in the middle of my frustration, I looked over at the artist next to me. She was using colors I couldn’t “see”—purples in the shadows, greens in the browns, reds where I swore nothing but beige existed. And suddenly, I had that Ah-ha moment!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Gift That Changed How I see - I stopped drawing what I thought things looked like…</image:title>
<image:caption>And began drawing what was really there. Brown wasn’t brown, it was rich with dozens of hues hiding in plain sight. A rusted watering can wasn’t dull, it was a reflection of unexpected color. Art forced me to slow down. To pay attention. To notice the world the with depth of color, not just I rush past it to achieve a “perfect” result. And writing this now makes me wonder: How many things in our lives have that same hidden vibrancy, if only we’d pause long enough to see?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Perfect Balance of a Persimmon - The Perfect Balance of a Persimmon</image:title>
<image:caption>When I first moved to Japan, one of the first things I noticed in fall were these bright orange fruit glowing on the trees: persimmon. Before moving to Japan, I had seen them occasionally in fancy grocery stores, maybe dried or a small amount among other common fruits. But in Japan, persimmons are everywhere and line the grocery produce section, front and center. They are like the star fruit of Fall. during fall. I love how seasonal and special they feel. And I’ve become completely obsessed. I even carved a linoleum stamp to create a shirt patterned with persimmons running down the sides. Every time I wear it, people smile. There’s something about the cheerful orange circles that just brings happiness, and when people recognize they’re persimmons, the connection grows. Everyone seems to love them and not just for their taste, but because they represent warmth and simple beauty.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Perfect Balance of a Persimmon - Seeing the Details</image:title>
<image:caption>The more I’ve studied persimmons, the more I’ve fallen in love with their form. The color alone feels like a million shades of orange in one: red-orange, soft golden yellow, turmeric, pumpkin orange...I could go on. If you look at one from above, you’ll notice a cool square-like symmetry: four leafy petals arranged almost perfectly across its crown. It’s not round like an apple but more like a circle that holds a gentle square inside. Sometimes on the bottom, you can even see a faint X-shaped pattern, a mark from how it grew. There’s this built-in harmony, a subtle understated geometry that feels both designed and natural. It reminds me that nature has its own order, rhythms and systems that we can rely on. ——> One of my illustrations with a message I wrote on top. I have no idea if anyone has said this but this came to me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Perfect Balance of a Persimmon - What Nature Teaches</image:title>
<image:caption>I realize how beautifully consistent nature is. It’s always there for us. It shows up again and again, season after season. And then I think about how we as humans can be the opposite. We’re unpredictable, emotional, full of change. Yet here’s this fruit that’s balanced and dependable. The persimmon tells us that steadiness can also be beautiful. The persimmon has become, for me, a symbol of gratitude for nature’s cycles, of nourishment, for the small things that sustain us. When I stop and think about it, if I have food to eat, a safe place to sleep, and people I love to share those things with, that’s true abundance.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Perfect Balance of a Persimmon - A Simple Reminder</image:title>
<image:caption>Every time I see persimmons glowing on the trees, I try to slow down and let myself appreciate it’s beauty. With the exception of taking pictures, it’s a way to stop being distracted by my phone (yes, I know you know!). The struggle is real. Nature always shows up and we are so lucky. Perfectly on time, perfectly itself. And maybe the most beautiful thing we can do is notice that, and let it remind us how to come back into the moment…and then make some art!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - From Sketch to Reality: The Story Behind En no Ki 縁の木 - - En no Ki 縁の木Tree of Bonds</image:title>
<image:caption>It started with a scrap paper, lattes, and five minutes. My friend and co-collaborator, Manami and I had just ordered latte’s at this cute cafe and I scanned the room looking for potential places to make an art installation. Why? Because we know how good it feels making art in a positive supportive space and we want others to get that same benefit. This is not about perfect technical drawings or conceptual art that challenges the viewer. Although that’s all really good! I have worked with kids and adults from professional artists to people who say “I can’t draw, “ or “I’m not creative.” No matter what a person’s background is, creating artwork as a shared activity makes space for people to open up without pressure. As we cut, glue, arrange shapes, something else happens. Each person begins to relax and let the spontaneous act of creating bring back wonder and curiosity, and we could all use more of that!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - From Sketch to Reality: The Story Behind En no Ki 縁の木 - - What Is En no Ki?</image:title>
<image:caption>En no Ki means "Tree of Bonds" in Japanese. It’s about connection. We wanted to create something that symbolized the invisible bonds between us. A mandala was the first thing that came to mind. The mandala shows up in cultures and spiritual traditions across the world. It reminds us of our wholeness, of the truth that we’re not actually separate, even if life makes it easy to forget. The general pattern follows radial symmetry and this provides a structure. Some people followed it but many created a completely different composition all together which I love. We hung them on a fabric tree made of old silk kimono from Japan - of course!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - From Sketch to Reality: The Story Behind En no Ki 縁の木 - - The Magic of Making Something from Everyday Material</image:title>
<image:caption>My brain doesn’t shut off when it comes to creating. Whether it’s a pile of old fabrics, scraps of paper, or an empty yogurt container, I see potential. Probably to a fault, since I have to force myself not to save everything! Yes, I love a beautiful art supply store. But there’s something special about the challenge of creating from what’s already around us...and it helps ease the guilt I carry about consumption, waste, plastic, living in a world full of too much stuff. I’m not zero-waste. I’m a mom of three. But I’m doing what I can. And art helps.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - From Sketch to Reality: The Story Behind En no Ki 縁の木 - - So, Why Make Art?</image:title>
<image:caption>Because it’s healing. Because it’s a reminder. Because it’s FUN! Because in a world full of everyone telling you how to do EVERYTHING BETTER and FASTER, art brings us back to real life, and back to connecting with each other. It’s the conversations between making, asking for help, or noticing something you like about your friends work and how it reminds you of a specific memory. Or in the example with my son and his friend, they bonded over T-Rex drawings and how to make them “extra scary!” These are the connections. On the days where you just want to throw everything in the trash…like everything, because there’s already too much in your head, that’s when creating can help ease some of that. And if you can, do it with someone else.</image:caption>

He once wrote: "If one wants to be active, one mustn't be afraid to do something wrong sometimes, not afraid to lapse into some mistakes." His paintings, thick with emotion, energy, and movement, were not about perfection. They were about feeling. <image:title>Blog - The Instinct to Make a Mark - Do you remember when you first started drawing or coloring?</image:title>
<image:caption>My earliest memories of making marks go back to kindergarten, but I know I was drawing long before then—because now, as a parent, I’ve seen all three of my kids instinctively start to draw the moment they realized their hands could make a mark. From that realization on, anything that could be used to draw was used—walls, tables, floors, even their own faces! If you have kids, you know exactly what I’m talking about. That pure, uninhibited joy of making a mark is universal.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Instinct to Make a Mark - Why Do We Have the Urge to Draw?</image:title>
<image:caption>At first, it’s about the physical joy of movement—pressing, scribbling, smearing, feeling the connection between our body and the surface. Then, the next stage emerges: the desire to represent something, to capture what we see. That’s when frustration often sets in—when our marks don’t yet match the images in our minds. I’ve seen this in my kids, especially when they try to draw their favorite superhero and get upset when it doesn’t look “right.” It’s a shift from pure exploration to the need for accuracy and imitation. In this stage, for many, leads to the idea that they’re “not good at drawing.” But drawing, like anything, is a skill that can be developed. And with time, each person’s unique way of making marks—whether precise or expressive—begins to emerge. But where does this desire to make a mark even come from? Why do we feel such a strong urge to leave a trace of ourselves?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Instinct to Make a Mark - Mark-Making in Ancient History</image:title>
<image:caption>This instinct goes all the way back to our earliest ancestors. Some of the first known human-made marks are the hand stencils in the caves of Argentina, Indonesia, and Spain, created over 50,000 years ago. Early humans placed their hands on rock walls and blew pigment around them, leaving behind an imprint—a signature, a record, proof of existence. Beyond hands, these ancient artists drew animals, symbols, and scenes of daily life—not for productivity, but for expression, storytelling, and connection. This is the foundation of art itself: the ability to translate our experience of the world into marks that hold meaning.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Instinct to Make a Mark - Mark-Making as a Way to Connect</image:title>
<image:caption>We do this today, just in different ways—through painting, writing, dance, photography. It’s not about being “good” at art, but about responding to an inner impulse. Mark-making grounds us, soothes us, helps us process emotions. For me, I see marks everywhere—in the natural lines of tree bark, in the shifting patterns in sand, in the way water reflects light. These found marks inspire me to make my own, and the process becomes a meditation—both calming and invigorating at the same time. Image to the right is a reflection of trees on water. I love the movement and feeling of this!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Instinct to Make a Mark - Try This: A Simple Mark-Making Exercise</image:title>
<image:caption>If you feel the urge to make a mark but don’t know where to start, try this approach: Look around you. Notice the lines, shapes, textures, or patterns present in nature or your surroundings. What catches your eye? Take a pencil and paper. Let your hand move across the page, inspired by what you see. You’re not copying, you’re responding. Let your emotions guide you. The more you draw, the more your own feelings, energy, and rhythm will naturally infuse into your marks. You don’t need a perfect idea to start. Just start. One mark leads to another, and before you know it, you’ve created something uniquely yours.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Begin with the End in Mind: The Forest of My Wild Heart - The Creation Process</image:title>
<image:caption>From one of those photographs, I set out to make a work of art. I had no idea what colors I would use, what details or patterns would emerge. I just knew I had to start. So, I threw open my boxes of fabric, pinned up the image, and sketched it out loosely—just to get a feel for the composition. And then I began. Like a painter mixing colors, my palette was fabric. My scissors became my brush, cutting shapes, pulling together reclaimed textiles and my own original fabric designs. I layered. I wove. I covered. I stepped back. I referenced the photo. Over time, though, I found myself looking at it less and less. The piece had taken on a life of its own. At that point, the conversation was no longer between me and the image—it was between me and the artwork itself. What did it need next? Ahh, that ugly green fabric I almost threw away—perfect. I knew there was a reason I saved it. This is how my process often works. Not always, of course, but this method—beginning with the end in mind—grounds me. It’s a lot like life, actually.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Begin with the End in Mind: The Forest of My Wild Heart</image:title>
<image:caption>You’ve probably heard the phrase begin with the end in mind before. Stephen Covey made it famous in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. But for me, it’s not about productivity—it’s about the way I move through creativity, and the way I (try) to move through life. Having a vision matters. But it’s not about control or perfection. Always easier said than done! When I started this piece, I had no idea exactly what it would look like. I let it reveal itself, piece by piece. If I tried too hard to imitate the image exactly, the work felt forced. When I let go, when I followed the organic flow of creation, that’s when the magic happened. Maybe that’s why some art feels alive, while other art feels stiff—because one is guided by intuition, while the other is held back by expectation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Begin with the End in Mind: The Forest of My Wild Heart</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s the same in life. Begin with the end in mind—but don’t get stuck on perfection. Don’t get stuck on a rigid idea of what the path should look like. Because the truth is, it will change. You will make mistakes. There were so many times I held up a fabric piece, thought it would work, and then—nope. Back to the drawing board. Each choice created a new dilemma to solve. And eventually, you reach that moment where you have to step back and say: "Hey, I think you’re done." That’s always the hardest part for me. Like a child so in love with painting that they keep adding more and more—until suddenly, the paper tears apart. I can relate to that.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you feel stuck in your creative process—or even in some part of your life—try this: Get a clear image of what you want. Not just visually, but emotionally. Find something that makes your body feel something—excitement, joy, connection. Write about it. Take a picture. Sketch it. Start moving toward it, step by step. You don’t need to know the whole path. Just begin. Let the process guide you. Adjust. Layer. Cut away what doesn’t work. Trust the momentum. Keep going, even when you’re unsure. Action leads the way. And most of all—allow for change. That’s where the beauty (and surprise) is.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Welcoming Good Fortune: Celebrating Setsubun with Family and Folklore - What is Setsubun?</image:title>
<image:caption>Setsubun (節分) means "seasonal division," marking the transition from winter to spring in the old Japanese calendar. Traditionally held on February 3rd, it's a purification ritual with roots in both Shinto and Buddhist practices. The central event is mamemaki (bean-throwing), where roasted soybeans are tossed at an Oni (demon)—a role often played by a family member—while chanting “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” ("Out with demons! In with fortune!"). This custom is said to ward off misfortune and bring health and prosperity for the coming year. The origins of Setsubun can be traced back to the Heian period (794-1185) when people performed Tsuina, a ritual of driving out evil spirits with peach bows and arrows. Over time, it evolved into the bean-throwing tradition we know today, with the belief that soybeans have the power to purify and cleanse.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Welcoming Good Fortune: Celebrating Setsubun with Family and Folklore - After our victorious battle against misfortune, we sat down to enjoy the traditional Setsubun meal:</image:title>
<image:caption>Grilled fish – Symbolizing protection from bad luck. Ehoumaki – A special sushi roll eaten in silence while facing the year's lucky direction (determined by the zodiac). << okay, we didn’t do that part as you can imagine it’s hard with a family. Sit in silence? No way! Even our youngest, aged one-and-a-half, joined in—although she had no idea what was really happening. But she could feel the energy, the joy, and the connection in the room.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Welcoming Good Fortune: Celebrating Setsubun with Family and Folklore - The Importance of Folklore, Play, and Human Connection</image:title>
<image:caption>This whole experience got me thinking about ritual, imagination, and play. At first glance, Setsubun seems like a silly, lighthearted tradition—throwing beans at a costumed family member, chanting magical words. But beneath it is something deeply human. We need rituals. We need ways to process the unseen forces of life—fear, uncertainty, hope, and renewal. We also need play—the ability to act out and reimagine the battle between good and evil in a way that makes us laugh instead of despair. In a world that can feel heavy with real struggles, taking a moment to playfully banish negativity is surprisingly therapeutic. Even if only for a night, we can believe that a handful of beans can push bad luck out the door and invite in happiness and good fortune. So as I reflect on Setsubun, I think about what it means to be human (especially in today’s fast changing world)—to celebrate, to play, to connect. And maybe, just maybe, to remember that even in serious times, there’s room for laughter and imagination. Until next year, Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Who Gets to Be an Artist? Challenging the Labels That Hold Us Back - At my recent Mandala Workshop, two participants shared a belief that I’ve heard countless times:</image:title>
<image:caption>“I’m not an artist.” But what fascinated me was that they had completely opposite reasons for thinking this. One believed she was too precise and mechanical—not expressive or free enough to be an artist. The other thought she was not neat or careful enough—and even had a parent reinforce this belief by saying, “You’re not good at art because you’re not neat.” Two completely different perspectives. One conclusion. This made me wonder: Who decides who gets to be an artist? Why do so many of us hesitate to claim creativity? And more importantly, how do we change the narrative?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Who Gets to Be an Artist? Challenging the Labels That Hold Us Back - Transformation Through Action</image:title>
<image:caption>By the end of the workshop, I saw something shift. Both participants, who started out doubting their creativity, were fully immersed in their mandalas. They concentrated. Experimented. Played with color. Tried different ways to create texture. And in that moment, they weren’t worrying about whether or not they were artists. They were simply creating. This is why I teach. This is what fulfills me the most: witnessing someone move closer to believing in their own creative power. <—A participant’s first Mandala…at the age of 80!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - You’re More Creative Than You Think - What is Creativity, Really?</image:title>
<image:caption>Creativity isn’t a magical gift that some people have and others don’t. Research shows that creativity is a skill that can be developed, just like any other. Psychologists often define creativity as the ability to come up with novel and useful ideas. Whether you’re inventing a new recipe, organizing your home, or sketching in a journal, creativity happens whenever you’re combining imagination and action. Research supports the idea that engaging in creative activities, even small ones, can enhance well-being. For instance, one study published in The Journal of Positive Psychology found that everyday creative activities—such as doodling, crafting, or writing—are associated with increased positive emotions and greater overall flourishing. These creative habits not only reduce stress but also provide a meaningful way to connect with yourself and the world around you (Conner, DeYoung, & Silvia, 2018). All I wanted was to flip off the monkey bars with my best friend, but I couldn’t stop creating little characters out of erasers in my desk. Even then, I struggled to focus on what I had to do because I was so drawn to what I wanted to create. As an adult, I’ve come to love learning—but mostly when it’s tied to my creativity. Skillshare classes, books, blogs, and endless questions are overflowing. Growth feels natural to me now, but recently, I realized I’ve overlooked an equally important part of the process: unlearning.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Art of UN-learning - Unlearning for Growth</image:title>
<image:caption>Unlearning isn’t about forgetting; it’s about letting go of beliefs, habits, or ideas that no longer serve us. It’s like decluttering your home—facing each item and thinking, “Do I really need this?” Instead of asking, (in the words of Marie Kondo), “Does this spark joy?” I’ve started asking, “Does this serve me?” And that question hit me hard. How much mental clutter, outdated beliefs about art, creativity, or even how I spend my time, am I carrying that holds me back?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Art of UN-learning - Unlearning in My Art Practice</image:title>
<image:caption>Subconsciously I think I’ve always believed “good art” requires a perfect concept, a big block of time, or a surge of inspiration. But when I let go of that belief, I found freedom. One day, I was heading to a friend’s house when it struck me: why not bring along some coloring materials? We could chat and create art together, no elaborate plans, just spontaneous creativity. And it worked! Not only did I get some drawing time in, but my friend also enjoyed the 15 minutes of unplanned art-making. It was a reminder that meaningful creative moments don’t need planning, often they flourish in spontaneity.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It’s like this: Selection: I’m drawn to vibrant patterns but also love subtle neutrals for contrast. Blending Old and New: I layer vintage kimono fabrics with my own hand-printed or digital textile designs to create art that merges printmaking, painting, collage, and quilting. Handcrafted Originals: Flowerescent Collection brings nature’s vibrancy while giving these old kimonos a fresh purpose.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Life Lessons from a Kimono</image:title>
<image:caption>Life Lesson #1: Craft a Purposeful Life While the kimono might appear to be a mere piece of clothing, its humble meaning – "thing to wear" – doesn’t imply its profound purpose. Each fabric, color, and design is meticulously chosen, resonating with the wearer's life stage, the shifting seasons, and significant occasions. As I deconstructed these garments, I was amazed at the precision of their make: designed to be fully repurposed, ensuring a cycle of life without waste. Every fabric rectangle remains intact, emphasizing the virtue of intentional living. In an era of impulsive, disposable fashion, the kimono speaks of foresight, of cherishing resources, and of nurturing purpose over time. Once a kimono was no longer useful, the idea was that the fabric could become something else: floor cushions, a bag, childrens’ clothing, and so much more. This is a reminder to shape our life intentionally, much like the process that shapes making a kimono. Putting it into practice: Watch this interview with Martha Beck on personal alignment. Image is a close-up of my artwork using various kimono fabric plus my handprinted fabrics.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Five favorite things about living in Japan - Seasonality & Nature</image:title>
<image:caption>While Japan does have many holidays, the seasonality is strongly tied to nature. For example fruit is a very seasonal thing: strawberry, watermelon, persimmon, pears and peaches are some that you can only get while they’re season. Local restaurants change menu items to fit themes of each season “sakura”(cherry blossoms) and in the fall there’s kuri (roasted chestnuts). The cycle of nature is celebrated and appreciated for its beauty and deliciousness! The photo on the right was from last June when I learned to make umeshu (plum wine) using sugar, brandy, honey, and ume (plums). I recommend it!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Five favorite things about living in Japan - Ease of Transportation</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve always loved riding my bike and did it often in the US whenever I could. But riding a bike with two kids…well, that’s a little scary. Commuting by bike is a toss up between convenience and safety. In Japan, it’s so common that people are used to accommodating the maze of pedestrians, bikers, motorbikes, and cars. And the best part is the electric powered “mama-chari” (mama chariot). I love riding this bike and as you can see,,,picking up the kids and getting groceries is totally possible.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Five favorite things about living in Japan - Textiles!</image:title>
<image:caption>Well, are you even surprised? One of the first things that drew me to Japan was the beautiful textiles. Last fall, I went to the Jidai Matsuri in Kyoto. This was one of my favorite festivals. Although, I did go to the fire festival that same night and that was pretty cool too! The Jidai Matsuri is like a living, walking museum that sends you back to different periods of time via the garments and accessories. Some of it felt incredibly modern and I thought to myself: I want to wear that now! Textile processes in Japan are abundant and more and more they are less common due to modernization. However, you can still find many places that sell, exhibit and teach about traditional textile practices.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Five favorite things about living in Japan - The Food!</image:title>
<image:caption>There’s so much to say (and eat!). I’ll just highlight one of my favorite style meals which is called teishoku. This means set meal or preselected. The picture here is from a favorite local cafe. Teishoku usually has rice, miso soup, a protein, Japanese pickles, and a few different vegetable or salad-like sides. The variety of teishoku is immense! Every restaurant is different. Depending on where you are in Japan and the season, this will change the selection of the set. These meals are well balanced and probably something I could eat everyday and never tire of!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Five favorite things about living in Japan - Parks and Safety</image:title>
<image:caption>Okay, this is really TWO different things but they do go together. If you haven’t heard it before, Japan is a very safe country, and that’s for many reasons. Since I have two young boys who love playing outdoors, this fact is very comforting. The public parks are also interesting with different playgrounds, gardens, cafes, farmer’s markets and festivals.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Five favorite things about living in Japan - BONUS: The Bathrooms</image:title>
<image:caption>I was only going mention five favorite things but I couldn’t leave out one that I might love the most. It’s the abundance of clean bathrooms everywhere! Who doesn’t love accessible toilets?!</image:caption>
