Home is where the heART is.

Spring is Here!

Spring might be my favorite season because it feels hopeful and full of potential. Besides this effect happening outside, how is your “spring” inside? I’m talking about literally inside your home! Do you know what’s still hibernating inside the depths of your closets?

Besides cleaning our home, styling our home has a big impact on our mood. Below, I’ve got some great ideas to help you create a more artful home which will bring joy and comfort into your space. Think of it as an extension of self-care :)

Art as Emotional Anchors

Personal Memorabilia: Incorporate cherished mementos and personal artifacts that bring back memories and emotional connections. Whether it's a framed photograph from a memorable trip, a handcrafted heirloom passed down, or from the various places you’ve traveled - these are pieces of your personal story and reminders of love that make you smile. Don’t store things away that are important to you. Find a way to see them so you can experience them.

Nature's Inspiration: Invite the beauty of nature indoors using botanical prints, potted plants, floral arrangements, and natural materials to bring in texture and life. If you can’t keep plants alive, art prints or textile artworks that evoke nature can do that as well. Even art made from natural materials brings dimension and nature into the home.

Artwork: Find artwork that you feel connected to. Don’t worry about trends or what you “think good art is.” Recently my son made a painting and it was so cool, kids art is often the best art! Or you could go for a commission of a favorite artist. Treat yourself! Or why not MAKE some artwork? Explore DIY projects to create pieces that speak directly to your heart, infusing your space with your personality and handmade touch.

Heartfelt Design Principles

Intentionality: Design each room with purpose and intention, considering how it will support your daily activities and reflect your values and aspirations. Create designated areas for relaxation, creativity, and connection. Ask yourself: does this space serve a meaningful function? We recently switched our bedroom with our sons’ and this allowed us to use a couple of chairs to create a cozy sitting are to read or journal. It took a bit of time to figure it out, now we have a new cozy space. Which brings me to the next point…

Comfort and Coziness: Prioritize comfort and coziness by incorporating soft textiles, ambient lighting, and inviting furniture arrangements. Layer soft blankets, fluffy pillows, and cozy rugs to create inviting nooks where you can unwind and recharge, surrounded by warmth and tranquility. This doesn’t have to be a ton of stuff, just enough for softness and comfort. Our family often fights over the faux fur blanket from Pottery Barn.

Personal Touches and Connection: Infuse your home with personal touches that reflect your interests, passions, and personality. Display your favorite books, artworks, and hobbies proudly, allowing them to remind you of the things you love and spark conversation while expressing your unique style.

Infuse Vibrancy with Color

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way—things I had no words for.
— Georgia O'keeffe

Personalized Palette: Choose artwork that resonates with your emotions and experiences. As Picasso said, "Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions." Surround yourself with hues that uplift your spirits and ignite your creativity.

Statement Pieces: Incorporate bold and eye-catching artworks as focal points in your rooms. Let them spark conversations and inspire imagination. Remember, art isn't just for walls; sculptures, textiles, and even functional objects like vases can be artistic statements.

Mix and Match: Experiment with different art styles, sizes, and mediums to create visual interest and depth. Embrace eclecticism and let your personality shine through the diverse artwork on your walls. Don’t be afraid of a statement piece either! It’s good to have variety and have some walls more bare, some with one large artwork, and another mixed with art, photos, and anything your creativity brings.

As you design your space, remember to have fun and not fuss over it. But don’t wait to do it. The moment you take time to set up intentional spaces, you will be so happy! Your home is more than just a physical space—it's a canvas for self-expression, connection, and comfort. By infusing your living space with heartfelt touches of art, creativity, and personal meaning, you can create a sanctuary that is a reflection of the heart.
